{"id":226,"date":"2012-06-18T01:24:54","date_gmt":"2012-06-18T01:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nf3v.com\/wp\/?p=226"},"modified":"2012-06-26T23:46:50","modified_gmt":"2012-06-26T23:46:50","slug":"my-new-lightning-detector-is-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nf3v.com\/wp\/?p=226","title":{"rendered":"My new lightning detector is up&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, I was corrisponding with a fellow satellite entheusiste named Steve and he mentioned that he was thing about setting up a lightning detector system. \u00a0The thought popped back into my head recently, especially as I was looking over my weather display software and it had inputs for some commertial systems. \u00a0I looked into these systems, but there seemed to be some sigificant monitary investment (upwards of several hundred dollars) and <em>that<\/em> thought was dead in the water.<\/p>\n<p>I found two <em>hobby<\/em> systems, <strong>Lightening Radar<\/strong> built by\u00a0Frank Kooiman and\u00a0<strong>Blitzortung <\/strong>by Egon Wanke. \u00a0(I did a web search just now for Frank and found out that he passed away 4\/1\/2012. \u00a0May he rest in peace.)<\/p>\n<p>I setteled on the\u00a0Blitzortung design which can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blitzortung.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.blitzortung.org<\/a>. I contacted the creator, Egon, and in about 10 days recieved a kit that contains the antenna amplifier and a controller board, all for about $115. \u00a0I chose this route, rather than the Lightening Radar design, as the\u00a0Blitzortung does not need a sound card to run and can actually run on a very minimal computer.
