My first\u00a0fascination\u00a0has always been with weather satellites. \u00a0When I was young (about 13), I\u00a0purchased\u00a0some plans from Information Unlimited<\/a> to build a means to receive images from weather satellites…specifically the NOAA POES satellites in low earth orbit. \u00a0I never built the system, as it involved using an\u00a0oscilloscope\u00a0to capture the image to a polaroid, but the\u00a0fascination\u00a0remained.<\/p>\n Later, around 1995, computers became powerful enough to record the imaged via external adapters, then internal AD devices. \u00a0Around that time I purchased a Quorum internal receiver that automatically recorded the current overhead pass of the satellites.<\/p>\n In 1999, at the suggestion of\u00a0KB8PPA, I took and passed the Novice exam, but missed the 5 WPM code section. \u00a0I upgraded to General in 2008 and then to Extra in 2011.<\/p>\n Electronics have always enthralled me and I’ve inhaled more than my share of lead solder.<\/p>\n Finally, I also have interests in weather and seismology and have had some very nice interactions with leaders in the fields.<\/p>\n Please enjoy the website.<\/p>\n Regards,<\/p>\n -Mike<\/p>\n \u00a0\u2022\u00a0\u2022<\/a>\u00a0\u2022<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I ‘ve been an amateur radio operator for about 12 years now, first being licensed as KB3ELW.
